Healthy roots make healthy plants
Soil Blocking Class
Soil blocking is a seed starting method that we began using in 2021 because of its space efficiency, ease of use, and high sprouting rates. To learn how to make soil blocks, sign up for our hands-on class on April 12, 2025 at 10 AM.
Class Description
We will cover:
- Popular soil recipes and options available in North Idaho for soil blocking mix.
- How to make soil blocks and when to use the various sizes of soil block makers.
- Watering and fertilizer best practices.
- Using cinnamon and wool.
- Transplanting into the garden.
Each participant will take home the seed blocks they create in the class along with the tray and vented humidity dome. You can bring your seeds with you or plant at home.
Lessen Transplant Shock
Soil blocking enables the natural process of air pruning. When you transplant into the garden, root disturbance is minimized, helping your plants get a faster start.
Reduce Plastic
Soil blocks are budget-friendly, reduce plastic use, and are an effective way to start seeds.
Save Seeds
Soil block germination rates reduce the need to use more than one seed per block.
